How Teachers Apply: Step-by-Step

1

Go to canva.com/education

Navigate to the Canva for Education page and click 'Get Canva for Education'.

2

Create or sign in to your Canva account

Use your school email address if possible. This speeds up verification significantly. If you already have a personal Canva account, you can convert it or create a new education-specific account.

3

Select your role

Choose 'Teacher' when asked about your role. This routes you to the correct verification flow.

4

Verify your educator status

Option A: Use your school email address (automatic verification if recognized). Option B: Upload proof of employment such as a teaching certificate, school ID, pay stub, or official letter from your institution.

5

Wait for approval

Canva reviews applications within a few business days. You receive a confirmation email when your account is upgraded. Applications using recognized school email domains are often approved within hours.

6

Invite your students

Once approved, create a class in Canva and invite students by email. Students receive an invitation link and join your protected education workspace.

Google Classroom

Higher Education Options

Canva for Campus

Universities and colleges can purchase institutional licenses through the Canva for Campus program. Pricing is negotiated based on enrollment size and is typically sold at a significant discount from individual Pro plans. Contact Canva for Campus to get a quote for your institution.

If your university has a Campus license, all enrolled students and staff may already have free access. Check your university software portal, IT help desk, or student benefits page.

Student Beans Discount (Alternative)

University students who do not have access via an institutional license can get approximately 16% off Canva Pro annual through Student Beans. This requires verifying your student status with Student Beans.

The discount brings annual Pro down from $120 to approximately $101/year. This is not as good as the K-12 Education free plan, but it is the best available option for university students without institutional access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Canva free for teachers?
Yes. Canva for Education is completely free for eligible K-12 teachers. You get all Canva Pro features including 100M+ premium stock assets, Background Remover, Brand Kit, Magic Resize, and the full Magic Studio AI suite, plus classroom-specific tools like assignment creation and student collaboration spaces. Apply at canva.com/education with your school email or upload proof of teaching certification.
Is Canva free for students?
K-12 students can access Canva for Education for free if their teacher has a verified Canva for Education account. Students are invited by their teacher into a protected education workspace. Students cannot apply for Canva for Education directly. University and college students do not qualify for K-12 Education accounts but may have access through institutional licenses. Check with your university IT department or student software portal.
How long does Canva Education approval take?
Canva typically approves educator applications within a few business days. Applications submitted with a recognized school email address (.edu or school-domain emails) are approved faster. Applications requiring manual review of certification documents may take 3-5 business days. You receive an email confirmation when your account is upgraded to Education status.
What LMS platforms does Canva for Education integrate with?
Canva for Education integrates with Google Classroom, Canvas (Instructure), Schoology, D2L Brightspace, Moodle, Blackboard, and Microsoft Teams for Education. The Google Classroom integration is particularly seamless: teachers can assign Canva projects and students submit directly without leaving Google Classroom. The Microsoft Teams integration allows design collaboration within Teams channels.
Is Canva for Campus different from Canva for Education?
Yes. Canva for Education covers K-12 institutions and is free for individual teachers. Canva for Campus is a separate paid program for higher education institutions (universities and colleges). Campus licenses are purchased by the institution and provide access to all students and staff. If you are a university student, your institution may have a Campus license. Contact your university IT department to find out.
What safety features does Canva use for student accounts?
Student accounts in Canva for Education have additional safety measures: restricted search results (inappropriate content filtered), content moderation in student-created designs, limited sharing settings (students can only share with teacher and classmates within the class), no direct messaging with people outside the class, and adherence to COPPA, FERPA, and GDPR requirements for student data protection.
